🤰 Pregnancy & Abortion Safety

This page helps you estimate how many weeks pregnant you are based on your last period (the standard obstetric method), and explains why abortion becomes more risky when it is later in pregnancy or carried out in unsafe conditions.

This content is informational. It does not replace medical advice or the laws and policies of your country. Always speak with a healthcare professional or recognised service.

When is abortion unsafe?

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), an abortion is considered “unsafe” when it is done by a person who lacks the necessary skills, or in an environment that does not meet minimum medical standards, or both.

  • Using medicines bought without quality control, traditional remedies, or inserting objects into the vagina or uterus without medical supervision is extremely dangerous at any stage of pregnancy.
  • The risk of complications (haemorrhage, infection, uterine perforation, infertility, death) increases with the number of weeks of pregnancy, especially after the first trimester.
  • Even in early pregnancy, an abortion that is not properly supervised can be life‑threatening.

Safety tips and danger signs

If you are considering an abortion:

  • Find out about the laws and official services in your country (public hospital, licensed clinic, reproductive health helpline).
  • Seek services led by trained staff (doctors, midwives, qualified nurses).
  • Avoid any provider who refuses to explain risks, does not check your gestational age, or does not allow you to ask questions.

Seek emergency care immediately after an abortion or miscarriage if you have:

  • Very heavy bleeding (more than 2 pads fully soaked per hour for more than 2 hours).
  • Fever, chills, or foul‑smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Severe pelvic or abdominal pain that does not improve with simple pain relief.
  • Dizziness, feeling extremely weak, or difficulty breathing.

These symptoms are medical emergencies. Go immediately to the nearest health facility.

This app does not encourage or discourage abortion. It aims to reduce harm by providing basic information about pregnancy duration and safety. Decisions should always be made with a healthcare professional and in line with local laws.
